Over Dimensional Loads
When do your shipments qualify as being over-dimensional loads? What are the implications of entrusting a shipping company with these items? How much should you expect to pay for the shipment? Most importantly, do all shippers treat over-dimensional loads in the same way?
Overweight or Over-dimensional?
It is a common frustration among our clients when shippers use the terms interchangeably. In fact, these terms have two very different meanings.
Overweight loads. A shipping company considers your load to be overweight when it goes over a rig’s per-axle weight limit. Depending on the load, this does not have to be an overly large item. Avoiding hefty transport fees is possible simply by moving the cargo around a bit to distribute the weight more evenly. When this is not possible, the term “overweight” does apply.
Over-dimensional loads. In this setting, your load may exceed a rig’s total federal gross vehicle weight limit of 80,000 pounds and the sizing requirements for un-permitted transport on public roads. It is impossible to change the load’s distribution to return it to a regular classification status. If you are looking for a hard and fast rule, consider that any load exceeding eight feet and six inches in width falls under the category of being oversized. As a result, special rules are in place that govern the transport of these shipments across country’s roads.
Special Handling Protocols for Over-dimensional Loads
Hauling large freight items poses risks to motorists and pedestrians along your projected routes. To mitigate these risks, states have put rules into place that enhance safety. These rules enhance federal mandates.
Route limitations. Some roads are closed to rigs with over-dimensional loads. As you drive along during your daily routine, you may occasionally see signs that direct trucks above certain weights to avoid some roads and bridges. Working around these limitations – without adding too many miles to the haul – calls for the assistance of an expert.
Permits. Specialty loads that exceed certain limits must be permitted. Depending on the number of states the rig passes through, this can get expensive. Again, there are potential work-arounds during the route mapping process. That said, do be prepared to pay extra for at least some permits.
Safety equipment. Over-dimensional loads sometimes require the services of a pilot car to help clear the way and, in cases of loads exceeding 12 feet in width, of an escort to halt cross traffic temporarily. These are federally mandated, and it is impossible to get a waiver for the services. Not surprisingly, they make up some of the highest charges on your final bill.
Freight limitations. Savvy clients may try to ship multiple over sized loads on one rig. This is not usually permitted unless shipment takes place in a state with “grandfather rights.” Talk to our heavy load experts to get clarification if your load and route could qualify.
No holiday travel. As over-dimensional loads travel across the country, the rigs’ drivers must stop at weigh stations for verification of paperwork. These stations are not open on legal holidays. As a result, it is possible to delay a load by days simply by getting a late start in the morning and encountering traffic along the way. If your load travels through a state that prohibits weekend transport of over-dimensional loads, additional delays are possible. Factor in these eventualities when hiring a shipping company.
Common Problems During the Haul of Over-dimensional Loads
Perhaps the most satisfactory phone call you can receive is the one from your shipping company about an unforeseen permit requirement. This is particularly problematic when you are operating under tight time constraints. Fortunately, it is possible to avoid this problem from the start by consulting with an industry insider who spells out the various permits your shipping company needs to have in place based on the route you select.
A problem that is more difficult to mitigate involves road closures. The fact that over-dimensional loads face restrictions with respect to road usage makes this problematic. Our pros know the route network sufficiently well to anticipate seasonal closures. We warn you ahead of time that you may be looking at time delays and potentially increased mileage costs.
